RJ Abarrientos’ semifinals duel with fellow Filipino import Rhenz Abando is in peril after Ulsan Hyundai Mobis Phoebus fell at the hands of the Goyang Carrot Jumpers, 86-79, in Game Two of their best-of-three quarterfinals in the Korean Basketball League at the Ulsan Dongchun Gymnasium on Tuesday, April 4.
With the series now tied at 1-1, Ulsan seeks to put everything on the line in the decider and punch a semis ticket for a matchup the top seed Anyang KGC.
The former Far Eastern University standout Abarrientos, who started for the Mobis Phoebus, fired a team-high-tying 16 points on just 6-of-14 shooting clip, to go along with six assists, two rebounds, two steals and a block in almost 33 minutes of play.

Ulsan came up with a decent opening quarter after leading in almost double-digits but Goyang came to its senses and put itself on top by one at the half, 36-35. The second half was a replica of the first, with the Mobis Phoebus gaining control in the third quarter. However, with 3:32 to go in the fourth, the Carrot Jumpers began to turn their slim advantage of 73-72 into an 82-75 cushion capped by Dedric Lawson’s two freebies at the foul line. Gaige Prim pulled the Mobis Phoebus within five with a put back one-handed dunk off Abarrientos’ missed layup at the 1:19 mark. But Kang-sun Kim was sent to the charity stripe and sank two more free throws with less than a minute to spare, stretching Ulsan’s deficit back to seven. Prim came through once more with a layup to put Ulsan at the scoreboard, but Jung-hyun Lee responded with a layup of his own. With half a minute left, the Mobis Phoebus couldn’t solve the puzzle until the final buzzer as the Carrot Jumpers came away with the win. Lee delivered for Goyang with 33 points, while Lawson added 23 of his own. Anyang KGC, which advanced directly into the semifinals after leading the regular season, awaits the victor between Ulsan Hyundai and Goyang. Abarrientos eyes a semifinals appearance when the Mobis Phoebus take on the Carrot Jumpers in the winner-take-all Game Three on Thursday, April 6.
