Mayor Eric Olivarez, who was represented by by Majel Co, officer-in-charge of Special Services Office (SSO), said the city government has long been in coherence with the national government by adopting the relevant laws to uphold the country’s livestock and meat industry through the creation of the Veterinary Service Office (VSO); the enactment of the City Ordinance Adopting the Meat Inspection Code; the City Mayor’s Executive Orders on Task Force Bantay Karne, and its programs combatting the possible effects of ASF in the city.
“Our Mayor has always been firm with the enforcement of law, and never interferes with the meat hygiene operations of the city VSO,” said Dr. Karen Vicencio, City Veterinarian, who was represented by Dr. Sammy Santos.
The event also highlighted the responsibility of city residents to protect hog industry by not taking pork and products to inter-island trips as ASF virus might unintentionally be carried along to their respective destinations.
The ASF has become a major crisis for the pork industry in recent years due to its 100 percent mortality rate. It also affects several regions in the country and around the world and there has been no vaccine developed to prevent it.
