There are multiple Barbies and Kens in the film

Unlike in previous “Barbie” movies, the forthcoming film will be a live-action one. It features actress Margot Robbie as Barbara “Barbie” Millicent Roberts. Joining her on the journey as the iconic doll is actor Ryan Gosling as Ken.

The thing is, the movie is partly set in the fictional Barbie Land, which showcases multiple Barbies and Kens. On April 4, Warner Bros. Pictures unveiled the rest of the film’s cast which includes Hari Nef, Emma Mackey, Dua Lipa, Anna Cruz Kayne, Sharon Rooney, Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Nicola Coughlan, Alexandra Shipp, and Ritu Arya as different versions of Barbie. While Kingsley Ben-Adir, Scott Evans, Simu Liu, and Ncuti Gatwa as Kens. Serving childhood nostalgia are Michael Cera and Emerald Fennell as Ken's friend Allan and Barbie's childhood best friend Midge, respectively.

The “Barbie” film will also feature human characters to be played by America Ferrera, Ariana Greenblatt, Connor Swindells, and Jamie Demetriou. Will Ferrell will be playing the CEO of Mattel and Helen Mirren as the narrator of the film.

Greta Gerwig is directing it

Leading the film is Oscar-nominated director Greta Gerwig. The 39-year-old filmmaker is known for her films such as “Lady Bird” (2017) and “Little Women” 2019. She co-penned the screenplay with her husband Noah Baumbach.

Not much has been revealed about the film’s plot

When it comes to the film’s story, many of its stars said to expect the unexpected. In a conversation with People Magazine, America Ferrera said, “People don't have any idea what to expect [with the film], and I think that that's the right vibe… Whatever you think it is, it's not that. It's something else.”

Echoing the same thing was Margot Robbie telling The Hollywood Reporter that “whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different—the thing you didn’t know you wanted.”

“Now, can we truly honor the IP and the fan base and also surprise people? Because if we can do all that and provoke a thoughtful conversation, then we’re really firing on all cylinders,” she added.
