Vice President Leni Robredo sent her warmest congratulations to United States of America (USA) President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris Sunday morning. 

In a tweet, the country’s second highest official described Biden and Harris’ election victory as “an affirmation of the shared ideals” on which the Philippines and the USA stand. Robredo highlighted the importance of democracy, civil rights, faith, and inclusivity in governing one’s country. 

“I pray for your success,” she said. 

In their victory speeches, both Biden and Harris promised to unite and be drivers of healing of the divided nation.

“It is time to put away the harsh rhetoric, lower the temperature, see each other again, listen to each other again,” the oldest American President to be elected in public office said. 

“This is the time to heal in America.”

Harris, an African American with South Asian descent, also vowed to fight racial discrimination in the white-dominated country as the first woman and first person of color to be elected as Vice President. 

“I know times have been challenging, especially the last several months. The grief, sorrow, and pain. The worries and the struggles. But we’ve also witnessed your courage, your resilience, and the generosity of your spirit,” she said.

“While I may be the first woman in this office, I won’t be the last.”

According to the Washington Post, more than 90 percent of Black women voted for the Biden-Harris ticket, making the widest margin in any voting bloc in the US. 

Filipinos also took to social media to celebrate the win of the American leaders with hashtags “TAYO NAMAN”, “Halalan2022,” and “Philippines” as the trending topics.
