Eleazar orders crackdown on people selling vaccine, vaccination slot

Gen. Guillermo Lorenzo T. Eleazar, chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), directed on Saturday, May 22, the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) to identify and arrest the people behind the illegal selling of government-purchased vaccines for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Eleazar's order was based on the instruction of Interior Secretary Eduardo Año to look into the reports that some people are either directly selling the vaccines or selling the slots for the government's vaccination program.

Based on the initial report, the vaccines or slots are being sold from P10,000 to P15,000 depending on the brand.

“Merong espesyal na lugar sa impiyerno ang mga ganitong uri ng tao pero ngayon pa lang, gagawin natin ang lahat para mapanagot sila sa kalokohang ito (There's a special place in hell for these people but we will make sure that they will be held responsible now for their illegal activity),” said PGen Eleazar.

“Ang mga bakuna ay donasyon at binili ng ating pamahalaan para ibigay ng libre sa ating mga kababayan. Ibayong hirap ang pinag-daanan natin para makakuha tayo ng bakuna laban sa COVID kaya hindi katanggap-tanggap na pagkakitaan ito (The vaccines are either donations or bought by the government to be given to our people for free. Our officials have gone through a lot to get the vaccines so it is not acceptable that people are making money for this),” he added.

Eleazar said the selling of COVID-19 vaccines is prohibited since the Food and Drugs Administration has not issued a go-signal for it. He added that this is because the priority is to inoculate the people to attain herd immunity.

He also reminded the public that they do not have to shell out any single centavo for the vaccination since what is needed is for them to register and wait for their turn to be vaccinated due to the presence of vaccination priority list.
Vaccine czar Scretary Carlito Galvez earlier said that the vaccination of essential workers and indigent Filipinos is expected to start by next month.

Eleazar further urged the public to immediately report to authorities anyone selling COVID-19 vaccines or vaccination slots. Information or concerns may be relayed to the PNP through its e-Sumbong complaint monitoring and referral system.
