DOH says more than 127K essential workers vaccinated

A week after it started vaccinating individuals from the A4 prioritization group, the government has already vaccinated more than 127,000 essential workers.

"We were able to vaccinate 127,614 A4 individuals. These are the essential workers," Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said in a virtual forum Monday, June 14.

"We have seen crowding in the past days because of vaccination. We see the excitement of people to be inoculated," she added.

For this reason, Vergeire urged local government units (LGUs) to have a more organized vaccination so as to avoid crowding of people in vaccination sites.

She also said that LGUs may start the vaccination of those who belong to the A5 priority group or the indigent sector if they have enough supply.

"This is allowed, but it will depend on the supply. So if local governments see that they can do this, they can do it because the guidelines are there. They won't be violating anything," said Vergeire.

The Health official, meantime, urged LGUs to further reduce the time to detect and isolate COVID-19 cases in their areas to cut the chain of transmission.

Vergeire said based on estimates of experts, having 5.5 days of detection and isolation can reduce numbers by at least one third of the cases.

She added that currently, the average detection and isolation period runs to six to seven days.

"Nationally, the detection to isolation days is about 6.3, and 7.11 days for the National Capital Region," said Vergeire.

The ideal, she said, is to be able to do detection and isolation of cases 24 to 48 hours.

"Hopefully, we can get to that so that we can further slow down transmission of cases in the country," said Vergeire.
