DOH-8 confirms 10 Delta variant COVID-19 cases, 1 death

TACLOBAN CITY - The Department of Health (DOH-8) has confirmed 10 cases of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) Delta variant with one death in Eastern Visayas Thursday (July 29).

The results were based on the samples sent to the Philippine Genome Center in June and July, which logged a total of 97 cases in the country Thursday.

Of these, 3 reportedly died while the remaining 94 have recovered.The cases in the region were logged in Arteche, Eastern Samar (1); Borongan City, Eastern Samar (5); Can-avid, Eastern Samar (3); and Tacloban City (1).

The cases include a returning Overseas Filipino (ROF) from Saudi Arabia who was already tagged recovered upon arrival in Eastern Samar; a Person Deprived of Liberty (PDL) in Borongan City; a pregnant woman who was also swabbed prior to delivery also in Borongan; and a 78-year-old lung cancer patient who died on July 3.

DOH-8 disclosed local transmission of the said variant cannot be determined yet because there is an ongoing investigation over the said cases.

DOH-8 said the Delta variant is the fastest and fittest virus, which is 60 percent more transmissible than the Alpha (UK variant). It is also thrice more contagious than the original SARS-COV2 virus.

Recent findings show that it has 1,000 times more particles than the original virus, and has a longer duration of infectiousness.

However, it has a faster time to become more infectious from exposure that can transmit in less than 15 minutes of contact.
