The Philippine triathlon team left for Cambodia Saturday, April 29, with a goal to maintain or surpass its previous performance when they compete in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games slated next week.
The Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) sent 10 athletes to compete in seven events in triathlon, aquathon and duathlon, hoping for podium finishes anew after almost sweeping four events at stake last year in Hanoi, Vietnam. At the 31st edition, the PH team won three gold, one silver and one bronze. “I’m confident of our team. We’re targeting three gold medals… four, if we are lucky,” said TRAP president Tom Carrasco prior to the team’s departure. Fer Casares is expected to defend his title in men’s individual triathlon while also competing in duathlon, while Kim Mangrobang aims to retain her gold medal both in women’s triathlon and duathlon. Joining Casares and Mangrobang are Kim Remolino and Raven Alcoseba, who both seek to eclipse their previous silver and bronze-medal finishes in the 2021 edition, and 2019 SEAG double gold medalist John Chicano, who will be competing in duathlon. Other Filipino participants are Josh Ramos (men’s individual aquathlon and mixed aquathlon relay), Joaquin Baniqued (mixed aquathlon relay), Hearth Quiambao (women’s individual aquathlon), Kira Elis (women’s individual duathlon and mixed aquathlon relay) and Erica Burgos (mixed aquathlon relay). Competition fires off on May 6 in Kep City located in Southern Cambodia starting with aquathlon events, followed by duathlon on May 7 and triathlon on May 8.
