The Philippines made its medal campaign felt at the 32nd Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia after its women’s cricket team progressed to the final round in the T10 event Saturday, April 29.
The team prevailed over host Cambodia by seven wickets at the AZ Group Cricket Oval in Phnom Penh that also saw Malaysia winning over Singapore by nine wickets. Meanwhile, its women’s T20 team clashes with Myanmar on Monday, May 1, while its men’s T20 crew faces Cambodia on Tuesday, May 2. The cricket team’s victory came a few hours after the PH men’s football squad yielded to Indonesia, 3-0, at the start of the preliminaries at the National Olympic Stadium. The Azkals Under-22 displayed their assault but still fell short to their stronger Indonesian counterparts and absorbed their first defeat in Group A. Marselino Ferdinan Philipus struck in the 45th minute for the Indonesians, bronze medalists in the previous edition held last year in Vietnam. They went on full throttle in the second half with goals from substitutes Irfan Jauhari in the 89th and Muhammad Fajar in the 90+2 minute. In chess ouk chaktrang, Edmundo Gatus and Angelo Abundo also failed to advance after placing fifth in their respective groups in the men’s singles 5-minute event. Both Gatus and Abundo only scored one point each in Group A and B, respectively, where only the top two players will book semifinal tickets. END IT.
