Defending champion Nueva Ecija got tested to the hilt before squeezing out an 80-74 victory over Iloilo on Saturday, April 29, in the OKBet-MPBL (Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League) Fifth Season at the Nueva Ecija Coliseum in Palayan City.
Heavily favored, the Nueva Ecija Rice Vanguards instead played catch up most of the time before being bailed out of trouble by Chris Bitoon in the last 53 seconds and securing their seventh straight win in as many games to share the lead with the Quezon Huskers in the elimination round of the 29-team tournament.
With the Iloilo United Royals still ahead, 74-72, Bitoon drilled in a triple and then made two free throws with 35 seconds left to trigger the Rice Vanguards' 8-0 windup that pulled down the Ilonggo's record to 2-5.
Bitoon scored all of his 10 points in the fourth quarter and Michael Juico added six to power Nueva Ecija past Iloilo, which surged ahead 62-52 early in the period following a three-point play by Renzo Navarro.
John Bryon Villarias also shone for Nueva Ecija with 15 points and six rebounds, followed by JT Taganas with 13 points and seven rebounds.
Hardly missing the services of centers Michael Mabulac and Will McAloney, the Rice Vanguards ruled underneath with Jay Collado snaring 11 rebounds.
Iloilo got 18 points, three rebounds and three assists from Neil Tolentino, 16 points, eight rebounds and eight assists from Navarro and 11 points plus five rebounds from CJ Catapusan.
Other games saw the Bataan Risers dump the Sarangani Marlins, 95-77, and the Manila Stars trounce the Bicol Volcanoes, 95-77.
Bataan climbed to 4-3 behind the 32-point explosion of Yves Sazon, who drilled in seven of 12 triple attempts.
Sarangani, which skidded to 2-5, got 17 points from Cris Jacob Shanoda, 13 from Alex Desoyo and 11 from John Paul Cauilan.
Marcy Arellano submitted a triple-double (10 points, 15 assists, 13 rebounds) while five others contributed double figures to lift the Stars' slate to 2-5.
Other major contributors for the Stars were Jason Vincent Mancao and Adrian Celada with 16 points each, Mark Acosta with 14 and Kyle Drexler Neypes and Regie Boy Basibas, who both tallied 12 points plus nine rebounds.
The MPBL goes to the Bacoor City Strikers Gym on Monday with another triple bill pitting Caloocan against Mindoro at 4 p.m., Batangas against Marikina at 6 p.m. and San Juan against Bacoor at 8 p.m.
