Adamson turns back FEU, sets up semis clash with defending champs NU
Adamson turned back Far Eastern University, 25-22, 26-28, 25-15, 25-17, to end its elimination round campaign on a high note in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament on Sunday, April 30, at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.
The Lady Falcons finished the elims with a record of 10-4 to secure the No. 3 spot in the standings and set up a Final Four clash with defending champion National University Lady Bulldogs who are armed with a twice-to-beat advantage.
Kate Santiago carried out a team-high 21 points on 20 attacks and one block, while rookie Trisha Tubu added 18 points built on 15 attacks and three blocks.
Lorene Toring and Lucille Almonte chipped in 13 and 10 points, respectively.

The Lady Falcons bucked a second-set loss following the Lady Tamaraws’ resistance to equalize the match. In the first set, Adamson narrowly escaped FEU courtesy of a 3-0 run at the end after being put on a 22-all deadlock. The second set was different if not worse for the Lady Falcons, though, as they ended up trailing 19-13 midway after holding a slim 8-7 advantage. Adamson then recovered and eventually retook the lead, 22-20, but FEU responded with another fightback to even the match at one set apiece. The Lady Falcons remained unfazed and doubled on the Lady Tamaraws, 16-8, in the third set before destroying their spirited run to gain a 2-1 set lead. FEU had another momentum going in the fourth set, where it led Adamson, 8-5, after Alyzza Devosora’s off-the-block hit. However, Adamson was quick to get back on its feet and created some decent separation from FEU with a four-point lead midway through the set and never looked back. “Thank you for the win, No. 3 in the standings heading into the Final Four,” said Adamson head coach Jerry Yee. Meanwhile, four players managed to tally double-digit numbers for FEU despite falling short, with Jov Fernandez finishing with 18 points off 13 attacks, two blocks and three service aces, while Jean Asis added 13 points of her own. Devosora and Gerzel Petallo had 11 points each in the losing cause. FEU, which finished as the bottom seed last year, settled in fifth place with a 6-8 slate in the standings under Tina Salak’s first stint as its head coach.
