Students demand transparency over new UP Diliman chancellor election

Students from the University of the Philippines (UP) have called for transparency in the election of College of Law Dean Edgardo Carlo Vistan II as the new UP Diliman chancellor on Monday, April 3. Students attempted to break into the UP Diliman Quezon Hall where the UP Board of Regents held their closed-door meeting and demanded to "publicize the vote" minutes after UP President Angelo Jimenez proclaimed Vistan's victory.

"Malinaw sa atin na ang Board of Regents ay hindi demokratiko, hindi transparent at hindi nakikinig sa tinig ng UP community (It is clear to us that the Board of Regents is not democratic, not transparent, and does not listen to the voice of the UP community)," he said in a Twitter post of Tinig ng Plaridel. "Hindi tayo matatapos sa pagsusulong ng demokratikong pamumuno. Kung hindi ito manggagaling sa Board of Regents, manggagaling ito sa atin (We will never stop promoting democratic leadership. If it does not come from the Board of Regents, it will come from us)," he added. Meanwhile,Â Dulce Natividad from the UP Asian Center said that there has been an "underrepresentation of the student, staff and faculty sectors in the BOR." She also asked for the resignation of regents who voted against the UP sectors' pick for the position. Vistan will replace former Chancellor Fidel Nemenzo, who received vocal support and endorsements from sectoral regents and one regent-at-large before the election.
