President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. will attend the coronation of King Charles III in May, Malacañang confirmed Monday evening, April 3.

Communications Secretary Cheloy Garafil said this after Philippine Ambassador to the United Kingdom Teodoro Locsin Jr. shared this information with ABS-CBN.

"President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos have accepted the invitation to attend the coronation of His Majesty King Charles III and Her Majesty The Queen Consort at Westminster Abbey on Saturday, 6th May 2023," she said.

The President and the First Lady have also accepted the invitation of the Master of the Household, upon command of  His Majesty, to a Reception at Buckingham Palace in advance of the Coronation of Their Majesties The King and The Queen Consort on May 5, 2023, at 5 p.m.

In an online report by ABS-CBN, Locsin said Marcos will not be staying long in England, saying he will still have to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in Indonesia.

King Charles's coronation will be on May 6, while the ASEAN Summit is slated to start as early as May 9.

"When I saw him in the wake of [the late Trade Secretary] Bobby Ongpin, he said: 'Teddy Boy, I'm coming in, but we have to leave at once because we have to catch the summit (ASEAN),'" Locsin shared with ABS-CBN.

"He is going to be here," he added.

The former Foreign Affairs Secretary said King Charles and President Marcos know each other because they used to play polo together.

In January this year, British Ambassador to the Philippines Laure Beaufils revealed that the Monarchy had invited Marcos to the UK for King Charles' coronation.

"We've already sent him the 'save the date,'" Beaufils said in an interview with CNN Philippines.

The diplomat said Marcos could go or not, but the UK "wants to see" him there.

If he goes to the UK, there are many things the British government would discuss with him, including investments, Beaufils said.

This is because the ties between the two countries are "growing" and "expanding," she added.
