Yong Davalos' designs become new canvases for Melissa Yeung-Yap's art
Summertime dressing becomes more joyful and purposeful with 'XYZ.'
By John Legaspi
Beauty has always been at the center of visual art and fashion. Both mediums require taste, passion, and great stories to be relevant and meaningful to anyone seeing them. And as time goes by, the two become tools for artists and designers to shed light on the causes that are dear to their hearts. That is the case with local fashion label Yong Studio’s latest offering. Its designer, Yong Davalos, joins forces with visual artist Melissa Yeung-Yap as they produce a socially conscious line that is imbued with Filipino culture and dedicated to uplifting women.

Through the “XYZ" collection, Yong unveils a resort line with summer-ready pieces featuring Melissa’s abstract patterns from her current artworks. This moment brings the artist’s mission to a full circle after incorporating local weaves such as yakan, abel, and t’nalak, among others, into her masterpieces. Her abstractions are now printed on easy and dainty garments, offering an artistic touch to Filipinas’ summertime dressing. “My art is all about empowering women, especially the weavers from all over the country,” Melissa says. “I was thinking of how I can do the same thing but in a happier way.”

This is not the first time Yong Studio has focused its works on a cause. Since building the brand, Yong has been on a roll in celebrating feminism and supporting sustainable practices in the business through fashion. The line also comes in inclusive sizes of US 2 to 16 and is created to be flattering and empowering for the discriminating women that choose to wear them. “That’s our design concept. We don’t want to make it too ‘fashion,’” Yong says. “It doesn’t serve the purpose of thinking about the customers. It is my idea of sustainability. People will not love you if you are too exclusive and not inclusive.”
Yong and Melissa with the Zonta Club of Makati and Environs
“XYZ” also presents the collaboration between Yong Studio and Laz Filipinaz Trading Inc. for the project of the Zonta Club of Makati and Environs (ZCME). X is meant to symbolize collaboration, Y represents Yong Davalos and Yong Studio, and Z represents ZCME. Through “XYZ,” the brand aims to raise awareness and contribute donations for the various relevant projects of the club. With that in mind, proceeds from the sale of the collection will be donated to charity. One of the organizations that will benefit from the collection is the ZCME Marillao Hills Psychological Center for Sexually Abused Girls and Children. “From the profits of a limited-edition collection of art scarves, for instance, 100 percent will go to this charity of choice,” the brand states. “Then, from pieces of this season’s XYZ collection, 30 percent of the profits are donated as well.
