How Marilyn Monroe's shoes sparked a new dawn for this luxury brand

Fashion designer Maximilian Davis brings the culture of new Hollywood to Ferragamo.

When we think of the ultimate glamor goddesses of Hollywood, it is hard not to include in the picture the blonde bombshell Marilyn Monroe. Apart from her stellar performances on the big screen, the legendary actress also birthed numerous style moments that continue to inspire the movers of today’s fashion scene. One of her famous quotes was “Give the girl the right pair of shoes and she’ll conquer the world.” And her top picks of stunning footwear were from the luxury brand Ferragamo. The most memorable one was the red Swarovski-encrusted pumps specifically designed for her. When fashion designer Maximilian Davis was named the creative director of Ferragamo in 2022, he decided to mark a new dawn for the brand by looking at its Hollywood history. As a result, his debut collection showcased last September is imbued with Tinseltown’s glitz and glamor, presenting pieces dotted with crystals in vivid fiery shades, much like that signature Marilyn shoes. “I wanted to pay tribute to Salvatore’s start by bringing in the culture of Hollywood—but new Hollywood,” Maximilian said. “Its ease and sensuality; its sunset and sunrise… It was about looking into the archive and establishing what could be redefined to become relevant for today.” Filipinos can now see some of the pieces from Maximilian’s spring-summer 2023 collection for Ferragamo up close as the luxury brings them here in the Philippines. During the local launch of the line, Manila Bulletin Lifestyle got to tour its shop in Rustan's Shangri-La Plaza. Below are some of the collection’s key pieces based on the brand’s archival designs reimagined today by its newest creative director.
Bag with cut-out and Vara bow pumps Bag with cut out One of the hero pieces of the Ferragamo’s spring-summer 2023 collection is the bag with cut-out. This contemporary piece is hailed from an archive style from the ‘90s, reinterpreted with a new shape and proportions to acquire a new strong attitude. It features a soft canvas core enclosed in a brushed leather structure with raw cut edges and cut-out effects and comes in a monochromatic or bicolor palette. The women's style is available in three sizes: mini, medium, or large, while the men's and unisex iterations feature an extra-large silhouette with a shoulder strap and a top handle.
Vara bow pumps Think of it as a modern take on the Marilyn shoes. The Vara bow pumps are round-toe shoes in suede material adorned by a scattering of crystals of different sizes for a dégradé effect. Elina sandals and Elina sandals
Wanda bag First introduced in 1988, the Wanda bag was a homage to founder Salvatore Ferragamo’s wife, Wanda Ferragamo. Its latest version explores a more minimalist feel. It features a mini version of the unmistakably Ferragamo signature Gancini as fastening and comes in a stunning orange and red dégradé combo inspired by the warm shades of a summer sunset.
Elina sandals The iconic Gancini makes another appearance, this time, as a sculpted heel for the Elina sandals. The geometric shoes feature fine strips of leather, folded and worked using the “book” technique serving subtle sensuality. *In the Philippines, Salvatore Ferragamo is exclusively distributed by Stores Specialists, Inc., and is located at Greenbelt 4, Rustan’s Shangri-La, and Rustan’s Makati.
