GCash debunks rumors of account balance loss
Urges users to register SIMs and assures account safety amid the extension of the SIM registration deadline
GCash denies rumors circulating on social media about the alleged loss of account balances due to an "update" related to the end of SIM registration.Â
According to GCash, the posts circulating on social media about the alleged loss of GCash account balances due to an "update" related to the end of SIM registration in the country are not true. Also, the e-wallet platform reiterated that there is no need to panic or withdraw money because the accounts are safe. GCash and its parent company, Globe Telecom, encourage subscribers to register their SIMs. This is to combat the rising number of scam cases in the country. Currently, 79 million Filipinos are using the GCash app.Â
In relation to this, GCash emphasizes the importance of users registering their SIMs with their respective telco providers before the deadline to avoid deactivating their numbers and disrupting access to their e-wallet accounts connected to them. For Globe Telecom prepaid users, they can visit the official Globe SIM registration website at [https://new.globe.com.ph/simreg](https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fnew.globe.com.ph%2Fsimreg%3Ffbclid%3DIwAR03oWM1_-aOdykiQt8rjRWBiIBPfJWDpYDsNGh2L0_e1r1ajeXZ7bV8ouY&h=AT0-gp0jZdfIdpC04smt3uphdPh19mQWhkGNmZn6Hp39HUIykM2kK7vEouihNPlWD8Bc744i7WNDREnr3HGyz27qHkkkwmQoFMH23q5G9E-ml76PSg6cdDAelHunbUIiyjA) to register their number.
Postpaid users can text the keyword "SIMREG" to 8080 to verify the information they submitted related to their initial application for a Globe postpaid plan. To ensure a smooth and continuous registration, users are advised to have the necessary IDs and provide accurate and truthful information. This includes full name, date of birth, gender, address, type of government ID used, ID number, and photo. For minors who are registered users of GCash Jr., their Globe SIM card should be registered using their parent or legal guardian's name, information, and ID.Â
If users wish to transfer the GCash funds to a new number, they must create a new GCash account connected to their new number and ensure it is fully verified. Also, users must make sure their new number is registered for a smooth transfer of funds and proper access to their new GCash account. GCash guarantees that accounts and their balances are safe while the SIM registration process is ongoing. Also, only telco providers are authorized to process SIM registration, and GCash will never ask for your information through links, text messages, or email.
I recently talked with Gilda Maquilan, VP for Corporate Communications at GCash. I asked her what would happen to the GCash accounts or wallets of users who do not register their SIM after the deadline.
She said that GCash accounts and funds would remain secure. However, in line with the SIM Registration Act, users must register their SIM with their telco provider before the new deadline on June 25, 2023.
"Their SIM will be deactivated if they fail to register. If this happens, those users must relink their old GCash account to a new Fully-Verified GCash account using a registered SIM," she added.Â
Ms. Maquilan also stressed that the process would take around nine days to complete if this happens. Thus, for a better experience, she encouraged everyone to register their current SIM through their telco provider as soon as possible.
When asked what users should do if they receive an email or message that their GCash account will be restricted due to the SIM Registration Act, Ms. Maquilan replied, "SIM registration will only be collected and processed by telco providers through their provided channels. GCash will not ask for any information on behalf of the telco provider."
GCash also reminds its customers that the platform will never send links via SMS, email, or other messaging apps. Users are also reminded to NEVER share their MPIN or OTP with anyone except when accessing the GCash App via their mobile phone dashboard.Â
Lastly, GCash encourages the public to report social media posts saying users must withdraw their money from their wallets before the deadline. These posts are false and have no basis, and funds and accounts are secure as they register the SIMs.
