ILOILO CITY – A massive power blackout affected the entire Western Visayas region on Thursday, April 27.
The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP), which transmits electricity from power generators to power distributors, reported a system disturbance.
“At 1:51 p.m. of 27 April 2023, NGCP monitored a system disturbance affecting the Visayas grid,” it said in a statement.
The NGCP statement did not elaborate what caused the disturbance.
Affected areas were Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental provinces as well as the highly urbanized cities of Iloilo and Bacolod.
Consumers initially blamed their power distributors for the blackout which came amid the searing heat.
Power distributors Antique Electric Cooperative Inc. (ANTECO), Aklan Electric Cooperative Inc. (AKELCO), Capiz Electric Cooperative Inc. (CAPELCO), Guimaras Electric Cooperative Inc. (GUIMELCO), the three Iloilo Electric Cooperatives Inc. (ILECOs), Northern Negros Electric Cooperative Inc. (NONECO), and MORE Electric and Power Corp. (MORE Power) of Iloilo City issued a clarificatory statement.
The restoration of power varied in affected areas.
