This is my universe
Grade 12 students from St Scholastica show their vision of their world
By Jaypee Samson
On May 12, 2023, the visual arts students of St. Scholastica’s College Manila are set to hold their exhibit entitled “Reverie,” at the Social Hall and Amrhein Gallery of St. Scholastica’s College Manila. Ending on May 18, this exhibit will feature the works of the Senior High School Visual Arts students over the course of their senior year.
The following artists will be presenting works that fully express their thoughts and self-growth: Tatiana Elise Abel, Sarah Andrey Laguatan, Sophia Elizabeth Abrera, Mary Breanna Laxamana, Ma. Alessandra Michele Adam, Agnes II Medenilla, Angelina Jewel Bato, Jess Medina, Samantha Margareth Beltran, Ma. Gianaysia Ramos, Sophia Margareth Louise Chavez, Anna Amparo Roxas, Natividad Maria Chincuanco, Jewel Sanchez, Ma. Asha Calista Cruz, Angelica Gabrielle Sunico, Leisha Celest Gamos, Lauren Nicole Sy, Kate Valerie Guevarra, and Jovy Anne Tobe. In their senior year, the girls wanted to highlight their best works and give others a chance to see their vision of the world today.
The “Reverie” art exhibit is centered on the theme of the multiverse, a space wherein multiple universes stem from chaos. The idea that there is still beauty amid chaos is evident in the collection of artworks of this exhibit. This beauty is a reflection and expression of the artists’ minds, of the artists’ daydreams. Amid a chaotic world, artists are tranced by their wishful thinking, dreaming of ways to make a better world through their art. “Reverie” is a manifestation of the artists’ subconscious. Through this exhibit, the artists’ thoughts come alive and create their kinds of universe as they express themselves through their art.
The universe of the students breaks away from today’s conventional unpleasant realities. Moreover, the collections in the exhibition are not based nor set on a particular universe, but are based on the artists’ personal preferences and outputs. Commonalities will be found in the artists’ styles and aesthetics, showing a connection between creative minds—generating a universe. “Reverie” represents the antithesis of stagnation. It speaks of how the more an artist’s thoughts and daydreams expand, the more development is achieved, as both for the creator and the created. The lack of shame and burst of confidence to acknowledge their thoughts and express themselves through art is an essential step to self-growth as a creator, which is emphasized through the exhibit.
No matter how the world may look, the budding artists of St. Scholastica’s College Manila will continue to break past the physical barriers and show those who step into their universes not what beauty looks like but what beauty feels like.
