Carlos Yulo sees action in last leg of Gymnastics World Cup Series in Cairo, Egypt
Carlos Yulo guns for podium finishes anew when he competes in the final leg of the 2023 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup Series in Cairo, Egypt starting Thursday, April 27.
The 23-year-old Tokyo Olympian hopes to add more mints in his growing war chest after scooping a total of three gold, one silver and two bronze medals in the previous three legs held in February and March. Yulo opened up his campaign in this series with a bronze medal in parallel bars on the first leg held in Cottbus, Germany in February, before clinching the floor exercise gold medal, the parallel bars silver and the vault bronze medal in the second leg in Doha, Qatar early March. The diminutive dynamo followed it up a few weeks later with gold medals in vault and parallel bars in the third leg held in Baku, Azerbaijan. Qualifications will be held on Thursday and Friday, April 28, while apparatus finals will be on Saturday, April 29 and Sunday, April 30. The series is not only part of Yulo’s preparations for Olympic Qualifying tournaments for the 2024 Paris Games set this year, but also as a springboard for his campaign in the 32ndSoutheast Asian Games slated early next month in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. In fact, Yulo and his team are immediately scheduled to depart for Manila after the Cairo event on April 30 to join his SEAG-bound teammates. “He’s very determined. He’s very dedicated,” said Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) President Cynthia Carrion. At the SEAG, Yulo would only be competing in four events – individual all-around, team, parallel bars and high bar – due to the participation cap imposed by the organizers. Though Yulo wouldn’t be able to eclipse his five-gold medal haul at the previous SEAG held in Hanoi, Vietnam last year, Carrion is confident her stalwart could sweep all his events.
