Tokyo Olympic silver medalists Carlo Paalam and Nesthy Petecio spearhead a competitive boxing squad that will see action in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games in Phnom Penh, Cambodia next month.
Paalam will battle in the men’s 54kg while Petecio will compete in the women’s 57kg in the sport where Filipino fighters are expected to stand out in the biennial meet. The Association of Boxing Alliances of the Philippines (ABAP) is actually sending a 12-player field composed of nine male and three female with hopes of maintaining or eclipsing the team’s performance in the previous edition held last year in Hanoi, Vietnam. In that edition, the PH team won three gold, one silver and five bronze medals. Comprising the men’s crew are Mark Lester Durens (48kg), Rogen Ladon (51kg), Ian Clark Bautista (57kg), Paul Julyfer Bascon (60kg), James Palicte (63.5 kg), Norlan Petecio (67kg), John Nobel Marvin (80kg) and Markus Cezar Tongco (92kg). Joining Petecio in the women’s side, meanwhile, are Tokyo Olympian Irish Magno (54kg) and Riza Pasuit (63kg). The men’s team is actually currently training in Kazakhstan while the women’s squad is preparing in a high-altitude camp in Baguio City. The boxing competition will be held from May 6 to 14 at the Chroy Changvar Convention Center.
