City Council committee wants Maynilad to prioritize Muntinlupa in water supply

A committee under the Muntinlupa City Council has recommended passing a measure requiring Maynilad Water Services Inc. to prioritize the city in the supply of water since its plant and water source are located in the city.   The Committees on Engineering, Public Works and Infrastructure, and Ways and Means held a public hearing on Maynilad’s projects in the city including excavation, placing of steel plates on drainage in Barangay Putatan, and water service interruptions.  The public hearing (Photos from Muntinlupa City Council Secretariat) 
Maynilad is planning to implement pipe laying works along various streets from its new water treatment plant in Barangay Poblacion towards Barangay Tunasan.  The joint committee report stated that Maynilad said the pipe laying project will take up to one year to finish.  Councilor Francis Ian Bagatsing, chairman of the  Committee on Engineering, Public Works and Infrastructure, asked Maynilad if the pipes could be put along the river to minimize inconvenience to residents.  However, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) turned down the proposal as it could affect water flow and might result in flooding.  Maynilad has been implementing water service interruptions in Muntinlupa and other local government units.  During the hearing, Maynilad said the main reason for the water supply shortage was due to the turbidity of water coming from Laguna Lake, which is the source of raw water for the company’s Putatan Water Treatment Plant.  The new water treatment plant in Barangay Poblacion is set to open by November this year.  The joint committee said it is not opposing Maynilad’s pipe laying project but recommended that the company consider and address the concerns of affected residents including traffic, loss of income for business establishments, safety, and pollution.  Maynilad will also be required to apply for permits from the barangay, city engineering office and city building official office before it will be allowed to start the project. The company will also be required to submit all approved plans and permits to the committee and follow the plans and timelines.  The committee recommended that the City Council create a measure that will require Maynilad to prioritize city residents in the water supply since its raw water source and water treatment plant are located in Muntinlupa.
