The packaging and manufacturing industries are up on their toes to use technological developments to come up with smart and inventive packaging post pandemic and to contribute to green environment, according to industry experts. “With the present appetite for sustainable packaging and consumers' increased environmental and ethical consciousness, we have also witnessed altering global sentiments in the packaging industry. The packaging industry is rebounding now after the pandemic but we are optimistic,” said Mark Prakasvudhisarn of Informa Markets, which recently mounted ProPak Philippines attended by industry players from all over the world, including the World Packaging Organization, the Australian Institute of Packaging, and Active & Intelligent Packaging Industry Association. With a focus on sustainability, automation, and packaging design, more private enterprises will be relying on technology in order to stay relevant and ahead of the curve. At ProPak Philippines 2023, packaging trends were extensively discussed and shared by industry leaders and experts. Packaging nowadays is more than a receptacle for products. Technology-enabled solutions embedded in the packaging can now provide consumers with convenience, security, and product information. "Smart packaging nowadays also informs you how to recycle, how to reuse, and how to educate consumers on what to do with the packaging after it is used,” shared Andrew Manly, Communications Director of Active & Intelligent Packaging Association. Smart packaging now tracks parameters like temperature, pH levels, and freshness to assure product flavor, quality, and safety. Active packaging technology interacts with the product by managing the packed food product's environment to extend shelf-life. Additionally, it also plays a role in promoting sustainability in the industry.  With increased awareness about the environmental implications of packaging waste, manufacturers are constantly looking for new methods to decrease their carbon footprint and discover green packaging solutions. One of the most important parts of this trend will be the usage of materials that are 100 percent recyclable and renewable.

“It’s not just the material but the recyclability of the material that is important in deciding the sustainability aspect of it. Just because you’re moving from plastic to paper doesn’t mean it’s right. It may be plastic, but we want to make sure it’s a recyclable plastic. It can be used over and over again,” said Nerida Kelton, Executive Director of the Australian Institute of Packaging and Vice President for Sustainability and Save Food from the World Packaging Organization. Clean packaging and simple designs will also continue to dominate the market. Minimalism focuses on the product itself without the clutter of over-engineered packaging. “It’s really important that your packaging is designed to fit its purpose,” Kelton added.
