President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. believes newly-installed Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Major General Benjamin Acorda Jr. is capable of implementing needed reforms and getting the PNP's job done.

Marcos spoke of Acorda during an online radio interview on Monday, April 24, with former Social Welfare secretary Erwin Tulfo, where he described the country’s new top cop as “well-known” to him and “well-recognized“ within the police force. Marcos said that Acorda was “very steady” to do the job, noting the ongoing reform initiaves at PNP, from the housing of uniformed personnel to their pensions, including the probe into police officers involved in illegal drugs. Acorda also hails from Ilocos Norte, the home province of the President. “His name was always part of the shortlist. He is well-recognized within the police force at saka kahit na sa civilian, ‘yung mga civilian leadership natin (and even in the civilian leadership),” Marcos said. “Naririnig na namin ang pangalan niya at maganda naman ang mga report sa kanya kaya’t sabi ko siguro siya ang pinakabagay sa ngayon (We have been hearing his name and reports about him are good so I said he is the most suitable right now),” he added. A member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) “Sambisig” Class of 1991, Acorda will be the 29th PNP chief and the second under the Marcos administration. He replaced Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr. who officially retired during a change of command ceremony on Monday morning after reaching the mandatory age of retirement of 56. Before his appointment, the new PNP chief headed the national police force’s Directorate for Intelligence. “Lahat ‘yan ay sabay-sabay natin ginawa dahil kailangan na talagang ayusin kaya’t sa aking palagay ay very steady naman ito, ang ating bagong PNP chief (We are all doing that at the same time because it needs to be fixed so in my opinion he is very steady, our new PNP chief),” he said. “Kaya’t makakalma niya ‘yan hangga’t matapos ang trabaho (That’s why he can calm that until his job is done),” Marcos stressed.
