Surigao del Norte 1st district Rep. Robert Ace Barbers gave props on Monday, April 24, to Police Major General Benjamin Acorda Jr. for accepting the very difficult task of Philippine National Police (PNP) chief. "First I must congratulate him for taking up this daunting and this challenging task of heading the organization amid all these issues na kinasasangkutan ng iilang miyembro nila (that some of their members are involved in)," Barbers said of Acorda. Barbers, chairman of the House Committee on Dangerous Drugs, was believed to be referring to the involvement of police officers and even police officials like colonels and generals in the recycling of confiscated illegal drugs. This illegal activity gave rise to the term "ninja cops". "So heto, napakahirap nito (So here were are, this is very difficult), considering that an organization like the PNP must have the character, the moral ascendancy and unquestionable integrity, yung mga ganun, di ba (all those things, right)? So napakahirap (So it's very difficult)," the Mindanaoan said. In the end, Barbers expressed confidence that Acorda will deliver.
"I'm sure he is up for it, I wish him all the good luck and success. Of course we will support him," he added.
