Late Negros Occidental governor cited for marine conservation efforts


BACOLOD CITY – The late Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. received a posthumous award for his dedication and efforts for the marine conservation program in Sagay City and the creation of the 32,000-hectare Sagay Marine Reserve in the 1970s.

Marañon, together with former Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Gina Lopez, Jun Factoran, and Met Palaypay, was given the Normandy Honor for Peace Lifetime Legacy Award at the Ramon Magsaysay Hall in Manila on April 19.

The award, which was received by his daughter Agnes Marañon-Lida, was given during the Recognition of Good Stories and Gratitude to the Moving Characters: Bayanihan na Pasalamat para sa Katauhan, Good Stories, Normandy Chair for Peace, with others Joining the Joy of the Journey.

The Normandy Honors for Peace was presented by Normandy Chair for Peace Emilie Gaillard, Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development in Washington D.C. and Paris, Asia-Pacific Center for Environment Law in Singapore, International Council for Environmental Law in New York and Madrid, and Environmental Law Program of the University of Hawaii.

His certificate stated that because of his efforts, the once hotbed for illegal fishing became a marine reserve. This marine reserve has provided food for the people, preserved its biodiversity, and has become an internationally acclaimed green destination.

Negros Occidental Rep. Alfredo Marañon III, the governor’s son, said the family is grateful for the recognition and he hopes that the legacy of his father will continue to inspire the generations to come.

The event also honored various personalities in the field of environment education, law, solid waste management, road sharing, eco-governance, caregivers of the law of life, marine conservation, and international environmental law.

Also present  during the awarding were Sen. Cynthia Villar and former Chief Justice Hilario Davide.
