BACOLOD CITY – Policemen facilitated the surrender of a young member of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Barangay Kapitan Ramon, Silay City, Negros Occidental on Saturday, April 20.
The name of the 23-year-old rebel from Kabankalan City was withheld for security reasons.
Police Capt. Judesses Catalogo, spokesperson of the Negros Occidental police, said the village is still considered a Red area, because of armed men sightings in the area.
Despite this, he said the local government is open to accept those in the armed struggle who would want to surrender.
Catalogo said the young rebel will undergo evaluation to determine if he’s qualified to avail of the benefits from the government as he returns to mainstream society. He was turned over to the Philippine Army for custody.
