The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed the construction of two flood control structures that are expected to ease flooding in Naguillan, La Union and Alaminos City, Pangasinan.
Completed along Bauang River in Barangay Suguidan in La Union, the project involves the construction of a 450-linear meter structure, which has a width of 15.65 to 20 meters including mattress, “will secure the lives and properties of residents and the areas near the river will be better protected from possible water overflow during heavy rains.’’
“The impact of floodwater on physical infrastructure and the way of life of local residents is reduced by the existence of flood control structures,’’ the DPWH Region 1 Office Director Ronnel Tan noted.
Aside from the main structure, the DPWH La Union Second District Engineering Office headed by District Engineer Gil Lorenzo installed solar street lights to provide an adequate amount of lighting at night and to reduce the risk of accidents in the area.
Also the DPWH Pangasinan First District Engineering Office headed by District Engineer Marieta B. Mendoza completed a flood mitigation structure along Barangay Palamis, Alaminos City, Pangasinan.
Tan explained that the project in Alaminos City, Pangasinan known as the “Home of the Hundred Islands” is essential to reduce risks from flood and channel migration hazards. It will also ensure the safety of locals and their livelihood.
The flood control project has a length of 340.90 meters and a width of 7.72 meters.
