REFLECTIONS TODAY
Though loneliness can at times lead to desperation, it can also be the start of a journey to faith. To be lonely once in a while is a reminder that within us is a void that can be filled only by Jesus who walks with us, even if often unrecognized.
This is the symbolism of the “journey to Emmaus.” The two disciples who walk the road to Emmaus are lonely. In this state of anxiety, they do not at first recognize Jesus who joins them in their journey and explains to them that the Messiah should suffer and die. Slowly their eyes are opened: loneliness gives to fire burning inside, and hope finally blooms when they recognize Jesus in the “breaking of the bread” (the term early Christians used for the Eucharist) (vv 30-31; 35).
And having experienced Jesus’ presence, the two disciples immediately become missionaries, returning to Jerusalem to bring this good news that they know will rekindle the faith and hope of the scattered disciples.
Pope Francis has invited Catholics—and indirectly, all men and women—to take the path of “synodality” as the way for the Church and for human beings as they journey through life. It means “walking on the road” (hodos, “path or road”) “together, hand in hand” (syn, “together”). It involves communion, participation, and mission. It means listening, dialoguing, sharing what binds us together as human beings.
Christianity does not guarantee a secure life. A Christian may sometimes feel so alone and God so distant because of unfulfilled expectations and hopes. The experience of Jesus’ presence brings joy. At the same time, however, it challenges one to mission.
One of the most fascinating stories in Luke, the Emmaus narrative thus becomes a symbol of the continuing encounter of the Christian community with her Lord—an encounter which may flourish only after a period of uncertainty, discouragement, and darkness of the soul. *Source: “365 Days with the Lord 2023,” St. Paul’s, 7708 St. Paul Rd., SAV, Makati City (Phils.); Tel.: 632-895-9701; Fax 632-895-7328; E-mail:*[*[email protected]*](mailto:[email protected])*; Website:*[*http://www.stpauls.ph*](http://www.stpauls.ph)*.*
