SIM registration deadline approaches, no extension announced

Update: 20% of mobile phone users may lose digital payments access

The SIM registration, which officially began on December 27, 2022, is set to end on April 26, 2023. All existing SIMs will be deactivated after the deadline and will require new SIMs to be in "deactivated mode" until the buyer registers them. The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) initially had the option to extend the registration period for another 120 days but has recently announced that there will be no extension beyond the April deadline.

The DICT encourages the public to register their SIMs, as it will provide law enforcement agencies with the necessary tools to crack down on criminals who use SIM numbers for illegal activities. Failure to register a SIM will result in its deactivation, preventing users from sending or receiving calls and text messages and accessing mobile applications and digital wallets.

The SIM Registration Act, which governs this process, places "primacy on the fundamental rights of Filipinos" and includes safeguards to ensure the confidentiality and security of user data. Users who fail to register their SIMs by the deadline will find them deactivated, cutting off access to mobile services and digital wallets.

With the April 26 deadline fast approaching and no extension in sight, users are urged to register their SIMs to avoid any potential disruptions to their mobile services and access to digital wallets.
