Iloilo City creates Human Rights Action Center

ILOILO CITY -- A Human Rights Action Center (HRAC) has been created in this city by Mayor Jerry Treñas. The creation of HRAC was through Executive Order No. 2023-045 which Mayor Trañas issued on Wednesday, April 19, as the city joined the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) in the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Under the tutelage of the Iloilo City Legal Office, the HRAC will handle human rights promotions as well as the place to file complaints for alleged human rights violations. Treñas’ creation of HRAC came the same day CHR Chairperson Richard Palpal-latoc visited the city for the regional launch of CHR’s Lakbay Karapatan Tungo sa Kamalayan (LaKarAn) caravan. Atty. Jonnie Dabuco, CHR-6’s officer-in-charge, said that LaKarAn strengthens the education and promotion of human rights in the grassroots communities such as the barangays (villages) as well as the marginalized sectors. Aside from the local government unit (LGU), the CHR is encouraging the creation of HRACs in the barangay level in Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental provinces.
