The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) in an advisory on Sunday, April 2, reminded the public to be more cautious in and around water to prevent drowning since more people are going to beaches and pools this dry season.
"Children are at a higher risk as drowning can happen quickly. The best thing anyone can do to stay safe in the water is to learn how to swim. The PRC offers swimming and water safety courses that are suitable for all ages," said PRC Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Richard Gordon.
On March 21, the state weather bureau officially declared the start of the dry season.

Based on the data gathered by the Philippine Statistics Authority from 2006 to 2013, the month of April had the highest number of deaths caused by drowning. Meanwhile, the World Health Organization said in 2022 that over 3,000 Filipinos die from drowning yearly, with children posing a significantly higher risk. "Please do not swim alone, and be knowledgeable of the water environment and potential hazards such as currents and depth changes. Following basic water safety tips can keep you and your family safe whenever you are in the water," said PRC Secretary General Gwendolyn Pang. Gordon assured that the Red Cross 143 volunteers in all PRC chapters nationwide are also prepared to report and respond to drowning incidents in their coverage areas. "To know more about the Philippine Red Cross Water Safety Program, contact the nearest PRC Chapter or PRC Safety Services at (+63 2) 8790-2365 to 66, (+63 2) 8790-2300 loc. 933/934, or email them at [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])," PRC said.
