Eya Laure explodes with 29 as UST snaps La Salle's 9-game win run
First it was the defending champion National University, now it is the league's top seed.
University of Santo Tomas turned back De La Salle in a convincing four-set victory, 25-19, 14-25, 25-18, 25-12, in the second round of the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament Sunday, April 2, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
With the win, the Golden Tigresses snapped the Lady Spikers’ nine-game winning streak to bring back the Final Four format this season and improved 7-3 in the standings.
UST veteran Eya Laure led the charge after dropping 29 points all from attacks, while Milena Alessandrini contributed 20 markers built on 17 attacks and three blocks.

Regina Jurado finished with a 12-point outing off 11 attacks and an ace. Unlike in the first round, the Golden Tigresses only needed an extra set to keep the Lady Spikers at bay and put an end to their perfect run. After the fourth deadlock of the opening set at 13-all, UST found its rhythm to pull away and put itself on top of La Salle by five following a 7-2 run capped by Laure’s three straight points. From then on, the gap was too far ahead for the Lady Spikers to close in on. But La Salle struck back in the second set with a 14-25 rout of UST to even the match at one set apiece. However, UST brushed off La Salle’s counter and continued its determined run in the third set after staging a 4-0 run to untangle itself from another deadlock, 18-14. Angel Canino pulled the Lady Spikers within three with an off-the-block point, but Laure came through and immediately responded with three consecutive points late in the set to make it a 23-18 advantage. Jolina dela Cruz then committed a costly net violation before Jurado punctuated it to hand UST the 2-1 set lead. The fourth set was different if not better for the Golden Tigresses as Alessandrini went on three successive scoring of her own for the biggest lead of the set, 18-8. Despite Canino’s last ditch effort to force a decider, the deficit already ballooned to as many as they could handle. Laure then drilled the last two points as UST pulled off the upset win over the league-leading La Salle. Canino, who was almost blanked in the first set with only a single point, was the lone bright spot for the Lady Spikers with 13 points. The rest of the La Salle side was held to a single-digit production, which was a far cry from its previous team performance as it absorbed a 9-1 record.
