A well-made beef tendon is one of my weaknesses. I’ve tried a few good ones. North Park makes a good one in their piping noodle soup. Eat Fresh is also one of my favorites. Here though, I love the melt-in-your-mouth tendon over braised noodles. Such a winner! Contrary to what most think, tendon is not fat. It is collagen and therefore healthy (at least that’s what I’m told and would rather believe).
A couple of weeks ago, I and a few others were invited by a dear friend to spend a few days at Anvaya Cove in Morong, Bataan. This friend will give Martha Stewart a run for her money. Everything at her place is well set up from the rooms and the bathrooms to the sala, kitchen, and of course the food.
At one meal, she served outstanding USDA prime grade rib eye steaks from Vicky Choi (+63917 521 0523). At another meal, we had pasta and many more. Each breakfast at her place was way too memorable too.
There was one meal I’d drive back home to Manila in a jiffy for. She served us beef tendon over noodles in piping hot broth. OMG! It was so good. I kept on telling our friends how delicious it was (I can be annoyingly repetitious when I discover something delicious—sorry po). I was told it was from Mien San along Ortigas. I immediately made plans.
Our gun club 2011 meets regularly. I had one set up at Mien San. My friends trust me with the restaurant choice.
Beef tendon over noodles and fried wonton
I arrived first and hungry. As soon as I sat down, I got rattled. I was confused on what to order. I asked for suggestions and was told a few things. I ordered the beef tendon over noodles and some fried wantons. The wontons were quite good but I zeroed in on the noodles. The soup was hot, thick, and sticky, so delicious. The tendon melted in your mouth. As my friends arrived batch after batch, I knew they would love this, so I ordered another serving. When all the food arrived, I realized I had ordered too much. It’s a bad habit of mine.
Pickled cucumbers and tofu with century eggs
Basic fried rice and salt and pepper calamari
We also ordered pickled cucumber, tofu with century egg, salt and pepper squid, fried rice, toasted siopao, some steamed fish, and steamed dumplings over chili sauce. The ones that really stood out were the cucumber, squid, fish, of course the tendon noodles soup and the fried siopao. BTW, all the food was gone in no time. It was that good. Tendon? Winner! I will most certainly be back at Mien San. I had been here before but it is only now that I appreciated how good its food was. Meanwhile, I’m counting on my friend Gina Navarro a.k.a. Martha Stewart of Estrella fame for another Anvaya adventure or any get together. Watch out for more of my food tours—Japan on April 10, Spain on May 25, and Japan again on June 11. Happy eating!
