An internal review on the reported link to illegal drugs trade of top police officers will be out in two weeks.
President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Tuesday assured the public that the investigation of Philippine National Police (PNP) personnel may be concluded in less than a month after the government conducted the process in a thorough and gradual manner.
He said the conclusion of the review has not been easy because “it’s a very complicated system” that the government is dealing with.
"Hindi naman tayo puwedeng umaksyon on the basis ng tsismis (We cannot act based on rumors). We cannot move on that basis. We have to be very careful because we have to [be] fair. It has to be just," he said.
"Malapit nang matapos (The review is about to be finished). I think in another two weeks or so, we'll be able to finish that."
At least 49 police personnel were alleged to have a hand on the cover-up of P6.7 billion worth of shabu confiscated in October 2022.
Marcos assured the police forces that the government has nothing against them, saying they are in fact his administration’s partner in ensuring peace and order.
But he called on the members of the PNP to cooperate in the undertaking as the government has to address the proliferation of illegal drugs as well as ensure a credible and well-functioning police force in the country.
"The police have to be with us. They have to be on our side. We cannot do it without them. Ganun lang kasimple ‘yun (It’s as simple as that). We have to have a good functioning police force," he said.
"Now, but there should be also a mechanism where those who have succumbed to temptation must be brought to account para naman mabuwag natin ang mga ganyang klaseng sistema (so we can rid that kind of system)," Marcos added.
