Feast of Saint Agnes on April 20

The Roman Catholic Church will honor on Thursday, April 20, the memory of one of the most well venerated Dominican saints of the Holy Rosary - Saint Agnes (Santa Ines) of Montepulciano, a great devotee of the Blessed Mother. Holy masses and novenas will be held in honor of the well-loved founder of the first monastery for Dominican nuns in Italy. Born in Montepulciano in Tuscany, Italy in the year 1268, St. Agnes entered the monastery and embraced the religious life at the young age of 9. Because of her exceptional wisdom and sanctity, she became its superior at the age of 15. She later founded a monastery for Dominican nuns in Montepulciano, and served as its prioress. She was affectionately called Mother Agnes by her followers that included Saint Catherine of Siena. St. Agnes was blessed with the gifts of prophecy, healing, and the ability to perform miracles. She died in 1317 at the age of 49 and was canonized by Pope Benedict XIII in 1726. To this day, devotees to St. Agnes implore her intercession during difficult times and situations. On the feast of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary, her image is always included in the religious procession such as the La Naval procession in Quezon City.
