Ookla unveils top performers for Q1 in global internet connectivity and consistency
In the Philippines, Smart is the fastest network and Globe is the most consistent
Ookla, a global leader in internet testing and analysis since its inception in 2006, continues to provide essential tools and resources for millions of users worldwide. The company has expanded beyond its flagship product, Speedtest, to offer a range of services aimed at helping individuals, businesses, and governments better understand and improve internet connectivity.
One of its core products, Speedtest Intelligence, provides current and comprehensive global performance metrics for fixed broadband and mobile networks. This is based on millions of consumer-initiated daily tests using the Speedtest platform.
Designed to cater to the needs of companies and organizations looking to gain a deeper understanding of network speed and quality, Speedtest Intelligence delivers essential data for monitoring network performance. ISPs and mobile carriers rely on this information to optimize their services. At the same time, governments and regulatory bodies recognize Speedtest Intelligence as an authoritative source for assessing the state of internet connectivity in various markets worldwide.
Today, Ookla has made its Q1 2023 Internet Performance Report  on the state of the Philippines' mobile networks availabe at [https://www.speedtest.net/global-index/philippines?mobile#market-analysis](https://zwly9k6z.r.us-east-1.awstrack.me/L0/https:%2F%2Fwww.speedtest.net%2Fglobal-index%2Fphilippines%3Fmobile%23market-analysis/1/01000187915e7a25-a3c0dc0d-dd57-44d5-83e9-b66bb5adc824-000000/qobY5qBBtBQVHT4Mq_co1tQt43I=317).Â
Speedtest Intelligence revealed that, among top mobile operators in the Philippines during Q1 2023, Smart delivered the fastest median download speed at 33.39 Mbps, followed by Globe with a median download speed of 22.29 Mbps, then DITO at 18.63 Mbps.
The "fastest median download" is the median value of download speeds recorded across multiple tests for a specific internet service provider (ISP), mobile carrier, or device. It is a measure of the typical download speed that users can expect to experience from the provider or device in question. The median is calculated by arranging all the recorded download speeds in ascending order and then identifying the median value. If there is an even number of tests, the median is calculated by taking the average of the two middle values. Using the median rather than the average (mean) helps to minimize the impact of outlier values or extreme cases on the overall assessment of the download speeds.
In terms of consistency, Globe had the highest score in the country for Q1 2023, with 83.4%, followed by Smart with 81.5%, and then DITO with 75.1%.
"Consistency" refers to the percentage of tests that meet or exceed certain minimum performance thresholds for download and upload speeds. This metric indicates how often users can expect to achieve a specific level of performance from their internet service provider (ISP) or mobile carrier.
An analysis of performance on some of the fastest phones in the Philippines found no statistical winner during Q1 2023. However, Apple devices had the fastest median download speed in the country, clocking in at 47.99 Mbps. In comparison, Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, and Infinix devices had median download speeds of 31.48 Mbps, 28.59 Mbps, 18.75 Mbps, and 17.19 Mbps, respectively.
As for the Philippines' median country speeds in March 2023, mobile internet ranked 79th, with a download speed of 25.63 Mbps, an upload speed of 6.39 Mbps, and a latency of 23 ms. Meanwhile, fixed broadband ranked 41st, with download and upload speeds of 90.57 Mbps and 89.46 Mbps, respectively, and a latency of 6 ms.
Ookla's commitment to driving positive change in the global digital landscape has solidified its position as an essential resource for governments, regulators, and ISPs. By offering accurate and comprehensive insights into internet connectivity, such as the detailed data provided for the Philippines, Ookla is helping improve the internet for millions of people worldwide.
