VP Duterte focuses on tourism, education in Capiz festival

Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte asked the local government of Capiz province to boost its tourism and disaster preparedness system while calling on communities to prioritize peace and order and education for children.

The official was the guest speaker at the 122nd Founding Anniversary and Maragtas Cultural Parade at the Capiz Provincial Capitol in Roxas City, Capiz. In her 12-minute message, the Vice President said it was important for local governments to respond to the needs of the people and continue the developments on the ground. “I encourage our local leaders to strengthen mechanisms that will bolster your tourism potentials — and at the same time, build up the capacities of other sectors important in your economic growth,” Duterte added. “Our common vision is to see that growth is inclusive and that we are able to address the needs of vulnerable sectors in our society,” she furthered. The Vice President reminded Capiznons of the importance of disaster preparedness and the need for communities to be resilient to the impact of weather disturbances because the province is vulnerable to typhoons. “Paparating na po ang bagyo (The typhoon is coming). Let us take the opportunity to prepare, educate and train our communities on disaster risk reduction focusing on mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery,” she said. But for the people to have the freedom to maximize their potential and pursue their dreams, Duterte stressed that this would come from the maintenance of peace and order in the province. Peace and order, Duterte pointed out, are the “core building blocks of economic and environmental sustainability” because the country’s economic freedom is predicated upon the safety and security of the people. Meanwhile, the Vice President, who holds the position of Education secretary in a concurrent capacity, appealed to parents to make sure their children attend school. She also urged them to call out local terrorism because it “destroys the future of the children.” “Ilayo po natin ang ating mga anak sa kapahamakan. Nanawagan po ako sa inyong lahat na mga kababayan ko na paniguraduhin natin na ang ating mga anak, ating mga apo, ating mga pinsan, mga kapitbahay, mga kaibigan — ay pumapasok po sa paaralan (Let us draw our children away from danger. I call on you all my countrymen to ensure that our children, our grandchildren, our cousins, our neighbors, our friends — are going to school),” Duterte said, adding that the “key” to progress was education. “Ilayo po natin sila sa insurhensiya, terorismo, ilegal na droga, at kriminalidad (Let us draw them away from insurgency, terrorism, illegal drugs, and criminality),” she stressed.
