Calatrava police chief Police Major Ronald Santillan said the two friends, along with their other companions, were supposed to clean the well. Trencio went down first, but after a while, he became unresponsive, and may have experienced shortness of breath. Amaro followed to rescue him, but just the same, he also suffered suffocation inside the well. Santillan said the two victims fell into the water and drowned. The well is estimated to be 20 feet deep, he added. Santillan said that their neighbors called for help, but it took several hours to retrieve the victims’ bodies from the well. He said the victims’ family opted not to bring the victims to the hospital nor call the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) because they believed that the victims were already dead.
