Mayor Wes gives grocery gift cheques to solo parents

Valenzuela City Mayor Weslie "Wes" Gatchalian led the distribution of grocery gift certificates to registered solo parents in the city during the city's inaugural "Solo Parent's Day" program at Wes Arena in Barangay Punturin on Friday, April 15. Gatchalian said that he wants to financially assist single parents amid the constant price increase in commodities. He noted that there are over 8,000 solo parents registered in the city. Each registered solo parent received a one-time grocery coupon subsidy worth P500. He added that a total of P3.7 million was allotted for the said distribution. (Valenzuela PIO / MANILA BULLETIN) According to Valenzuela City Vice Mayor Lorie Natividady Borja, the local government had also prepared training sessions where solo parents learned about parenting and livelihood. She also said that the city has already implemented various programs to provide assistance to solo parents. Since it's the city's first celebration of Solo Parent's Day, special dance performances from some solo parents from different city districts entertained the audience during the program. A cooking session with Chef Eugene Raymundo was also held to teach the parents about healthy meal preparation. The city government said that through Republic Act (RA) No. 8972 or the "Solo Parents Welfare Act of 2000," and RA No. 11861, or the "Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act of 2022," the third week and third Saturday of April of every year have been declared as Solo Parents Week and National Solo Parents Day respectively.
