Adamson recovered from a third-set stumble to turn back a gritty University of the East (UE) side, 25-16, 25-19, 20-25, 27-25, in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball Saturday, April 15, at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
The Lady Falcons improved their win-loss record to 8-3, strengthening bid for the No. 2 spot in the Final Four after sitting in a three-way tie with the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses and the defending champion National University Lady Bulldogs. Kate Santiago delivered the goods for Adamson with 18 points off 16 attacks, one block and an ace, while Trisha Tubu added 13 points. Adamson, which is coming off a straight-set beating at the hands NU, refused to be dragged into a deciding set after encountering some stiff resistance from UE in the third set. After cruising past the first two sets, the Lady Falcons suddenly lost steam and bowed to the Lady Warriors in the third frame. But Adamson slowly regained its momentum in the fourth, leading 21-17 following an off speed spike from Kate Santiago before UE went on a 5-1 run to tie the game at 22-all. The Lady Falcons, however, hung tough and saw the Lady Warriors commit two costly errors that paved the way for an Adamson victory. “Tumagal pa, muntik pa kaming [matalo], so good thing naka-recover pa rin. And I’d like to look at the positives pa rin,” said Adamson head coach Jerry Yee. Van Bangayan’s 27-point explosion laced by 14 digs went for naught, while Riza Nogales chipped in 12 points in the losing effort as UE plummeted to its 11th straight defeat.
