IBP to new lawyers: 'Serve with honor, passion, excellence'
The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) has challenged the country’s 3,992 new lawyers “to work for the purpose of attaining justice and making justice accessible to all walks of life.”
After the May 2 oathtaking and signing of the Roll of Attorneys, all the new lawyers will automatically become members of the IBP, the officially recognized association of lawyers in the country.
In a statement signed by IBP President Burt M. Estrada, the IBP urged the new lawyers to “conscientiously and courageously defend our constitution and contribute to preserving and regaining our people’s trust in our legal system.”
It said lawyers should not be “discouraged or disillusioned” by the many challenges that will undoubtedly face them, but rather, urged them to “remain steadfast in preserving the honor, privilege, duty, and responsibility of practicing law as an officer of the court in the interest of our people.”
It cautioned them not to be tempted to stray from the right path and remain true to their ideals. Passing the Bar exams is no easy feat, and having endured so much already, the IBP said that they are already a great source of pride for their families, friends, and colleagues.
“As you work to create a better future for our nation, let your ideals lead the way. You are called to serve. Serve with honor, passion, and excellence,” it stressed.
“Amidst all fear, confusion, and worst of all, injustice, may you stay true to your calling as a lawyer -- to give everyone their due, to allow everyone their day in court, and to empower those who have less in life, for this has always been the defining characteristic of justice and the spirit of our laws,” it added.
