The story of a distressed overseas Filipino worker (OFW) being saved and reunited with his or her family is always worth telling.
Marikina City 2nd district Rep. Stella Quimbo has one such story involving an OFW named Shiella.
Shiella, who worked in Riyadh in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, unfortunately dealt with abuse during her stay in the oil-rich country.
"Nang lumapit po ang kanyang kapatid sa aking opisina para matulungan siyang umuwi dahil sa nararanasan niyang abusive working conditions na nagdulot ng depresyon, agad po akong umaksyon. Ngayon, kapiling na niya ang kanyang pamilya (When her sibling approached my office to help bring Shiella back home from the abusive working conditions that had caused her depression, I immediately responded. Now, she is together with her family)," Quimbo wrote in a Facebook post on Wednesday, April 12.
"Di biro na makaranas ng masalimuot na trabaho lalo na’t malayo sa pamilya. Kaya po agad kong inaksyunan ang pag-uwi ni Shiella (It's no joke to have a harrowing job especially if you're far from your family. That's why I immediately acted on Shiella's repatriation)," he said.
Quimbo, the senior vice chairperson of the House Committee on Appropriations, stressed that mental health awareness is also once of her advocacies.
"Kay ate Shiella at sa iba pang mga OFWs, saludo po ako sa inyo at ipaglalaban ko po kayo sa abot ng aking makakaya. Hangad ko po ang kaligtasan ninyo palagi (To ate Shiella and her fellow OFWs, I salute you and I will fight for you to the best of my abilities. Your safety is what I always)," she added.
