The Bureau of Customs has tapped a group of technical experts to work on a proposal that aims to make the Southern Philippines an ideal location for storing, moving, and managing cargo.
Chaired by Customs District Collector Erastus Sandino B. Austria, the team has started working on a plan called the Southern Philippines Logistics Hub Project, which once completed, will create a world-class logistics hub in Davao City.
The Southern Philippines Logistics Hub Project aims to transform the region into a preferred international destination for the storage, transportation, and management of cargo.
The technical working group will develop recommendations for infrastructure, facilities, and policies to achieve this vision.
Once drafted, these recommendations will be presented to Region XI’s Economic Development Committee and the Regional Economic Development Council for adoption.
This is part of the Customs’ long-term strategy to encourage trade, as directed by Customs Commissioner Bienvenido Rubio.
“Through initiatives with our partner agencies, the Bureau of Customs vows to contribute to nation-building by staying true to its core mandate of trade facilitation,” Rubio said.
The team working on the proposal includes representatives from various government agencies, port operators, and shipping lines.
Meanwhile, Customs inspected the warehouse facility of ECOM Electronics Reconditioning Services in Guiguinto, Bulacan, which revealed a stash of alleged smuggled Smart Televisions (Smart TVs) and computer system units.
A composite team of personnel from the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS) - Port of Manila, the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group - Philippine National Police, Enforcement and Security Service - Port of Manila, Formal Entry Division - Port of Manila, and the Legal Service, RCMG, served the Letter of Authority (LOA) signed by Rubio.
The LOA was issued based on derogatory information received about the subject warehouse.
Upon inspection, the Implementing Team discovered assorted televisions of different sizes, machines used for lamination, boxes used for packaging, and raw materials for reconditioning and repair.
The estimated value of the goods discovered inside the warehouse is P20 million.
