China cites close ties with PH over past 47 years

Ahead of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.'s state visit there, China looked back on how China and the Philippines maintained a decades-long bilateral relationship, which it said has taken a "leapfrog development" over the past 47 years.

In a video posted on its social media sites on Monday night, the Chinese Embassy in Manila listed down some of the "wonderful moments of high-level" visits between officials of the two countries that it said "have steered China-Philippines relations in the right direction."

  • 1974 — People's Republic of China (PRC) Chairman Mao Zedong welcomed Marcos Jr.'s father, former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., in China.
  • 1975 — Former President Marcos Sr. made a state visit to China and met Mao again
  • 1975 — Former President Marcos Sr. and former Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai signed a joint communique to officially establish diplomatic relations between the two countries
  • 1988 — Former President Cory Aquino met with former Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping during her state visit to China
  • December 1990 — Former Chinese Premier Li Peng paid a three-day official visit to the Philippines
  • April to May 1993 — Former President Fidel Ramos and former Chinese President Jiang Zenmin witnessed the signing of bilateral agreements during Ramos' state visit to China
  • November 1996 — Jiang made a state visit to the Philippines
  • November 1999 — Former Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji paid a state visit to the Philippines and met former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo
  • May 2000 — Jiang held a welcoming ceremony for former President Joseph Estrada at the square outside the East Gate of the Great Hall of the People during Estrada's state visit to China
  • September 2004 — Former Chinese President Hu Jintao held a welcoming ceremony for Macapagal-Arroyo at the square outside the East Gate of the Great Hall of the People in her state visit to China
  • November 2007 — Macapagal-Arroyo met with former Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in Singapore
  • August 2011 — Former President Benigno Aquino III made a state to China and met Hu at the Great Hall of the People
  • November 2015 — Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Manila for the 23rd Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings
  • 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 — Former President Rodrigo Duterte made state visits to China in four consecutive years to meet Xi
  • October 2016 — Outgoing Chinese Premier Li Keqiang met with Duterte at the Great Hall of the People
  • November 2017 — Duterte held a welcoming ceremony for Li outside Malacañan Palace
  • November 2018 — Xi made a state visit to the Philippines, where he was given a grand welcoming ceremony by Duterte at the Malacañan Palace
  • May 2022 — Marcos and Xi had a phone conversation to discuss strengthening bilateral ties of their respective countries
  • November 2022 — Marcos and Xi met for the first time at the sidelines of APEC meetings in Bangkok, Thailand
