“Importante po ang edukasyon para mapagtagumpayan natin ang mga hamon ng buhay at sa ating bayan (Education is important so we will succeed against the challenges of life and our country),” Duterte said in her speech. “Lagi ko pong sinasabi — walang short cut sa tagumpay. Kailangan po ng pagsusumikap ng mga magulang at ng ating kabataan (I always say this — there is no short cut to success. Parents and children have to strive hard),” she added. The Vice President was the guest speaker for the town’s 10th Marilag Festival at the Laguna Town Plaza. She lauded the farmers and local government in Sta. Maria, Laguna for the growth of the town’s agricultural sector. Describing Sta. Maria as the “food basket” of Laguna province, Duterte recognized its role in the development of the whole province. “Today, we pay tribute as we celebrate the richness of your agricultural farms, the sacrifices and dedication of the people who toil the land, and commitment of everyone behind Santa Maria’s agriculture sector,” she said.

The official also commended the local government and the people of Santa Maria “for your resilience and cooperation in paving wider and more sustainable paths of development for your local communities.” She stressed that inclusive growth that targets the most vulnerable sectors is built on the foundation of good governance. “It is my hope that the local leaders of Santa Maria will continue to uphold the values of good governance and become even more relentless in embarking on initiatives for the improved welfare of the communities of Santa Maria,” Duterte added. She took the opportunity to offer Sta. Maria the Office of the Vice President’s (OVP) “Mag-Negosyo Ta ‘Day (MTD)”, an initiative started by the Vice President when she was still Davao City’s mayor. MTD was previously launched in San Pedro, Laguna, where Duterte granted an initial P150,000 financial assistance to jumpstart the program there. The program aims to empower vulnerable sectors in the community, especially women, through livelihood programs.
