"We are disheartened at the outcome and the manner by which the Board of Regents decided on the chancellorship of UP Diliman in utter disregard of the overwhelming sentiments and choice of the UP community," the group said in the letter addressed to UP President Angelo A. Jimenez. Vistan was announced as the new chancellor of the university's flagship campus after a four-hour deliberation of the UP Board of Regents (BOR) on April 3. He will replace Fidel R. Nemenzo, who was also among those who vied for the position along with UP archeology professor Victor Paz.

"[This] will not go unnoticed in the international community, especially in this age of ever-rising academic standards. This is not to say that you cannot be up to doing your jobs, but it will be a challenge to dispel the impression that academic achievements come secondary to other factors in UP," the group added. The signatories also urged Jimenez to "release the full report of the Search Committee, and to reveal his vote as well as to convince the other regents to do the same in the spirit of transparency and democratic governance.' Among the signatories were National Artist for Music and Professor Emeritus Ramon Santos, Professor Emeriti Guillermo Tabios, Maria Serena Diokno, Lily Rose Tope, Nicanor Tiongson, Elizabeth Enriquez, Basilio Esteban Villaruz, Benjamin Cabangis, Eduardo Tadem, Erlinda Echanis, Jasmin Acuña, Violeta Bautista, Amaryllis Tiglao-Torres,  Angelito Manalili,  Rosalinda Pineda Ofreneo, UP Diliman and the UP System include former Education undersecretary Dina Ocampo, former UP Diliman vice chancellors  Aleli Bawagan and Maria Corazon Tan, former UP Ugnayan ng Pahinungod director Jocelyn Caragay, former director of UP Center for Women's and Gender Studies  Nathalie Africa-Verceles, and Dr. Sylvia Estrada Claudio.
