What was supposed to be a time for reflection turned out to be deadly for some as 78 cases of drowning in different parts of the country were monitored during the Holy Week last week, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said Wednesday, April 12.

The PCG said the incidents recorded from April 2 to 10 resulted to the death of 21 individuals while 53 others were rescued.
Four victims remained missing in Antique, Camarines Sur, Leyte, and Catanduanes as search and rescue operations were conducted to find them.
The highest number of fatalities was recorded in San Jose, Camarines Sur on Black Saturday, April 8, where five individuals drowned in Brgy. Dolo.
Meanwhile, the highest number of rescued victims was noted in Vinzons, Camarines Norte also on Black Saturday where 27 individuals were saved in separate incidents in Brgy. Sabang.Â
The PCG said no similar incident was monitored in the coast guard districts in northeastern Mindanao, Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), Central Visayas, and Palawan.
Many people usually go swimming to enjoy the long break during the Holy Week and summer vacation. The government had reminded the public to take extra precaution during these times to avoid any unfortunate incident.
