Mayor Biazon lauds Muntinlupa student for bagging gold in int’l math contest 


Muntinlupa Mayor Ruffy Biazon commended a public elementary school student for winning a gold award in an international math contest. 

Lawrence Barlaan, a Grade 4 student at Muntinlupa Elementary School (MES) in Barangay Poblacion and a scholar of the city government, bagged a gold award at the 4th International Math Open for Young Achievers (IMOYA) held in Singapore.

Barlaan and seven other students from the Philippines took home individual gold awards at the contest. He and his team also won second runner-up in the team competition. 

Filipino students also won 25 silver awards and 31 bronze awards in the individual contest.  

In the team competition, one team from the Philippines won as champion, five bagged first runners-up, and six took home second runners-up. 

Barlaan visited Mayor Biazon on April 12 together with his parents and Dr. Aurora Bartolaba, MES principal. 

The student told the mayor that he wants to be an accountant when he grows up. 

“Pagbutihin mo lang sa pag-aaral, Lawrence (Keep improving in your students, Lawrence). We are proud of you! Buo ang suporta ng Pamahalaang Lungsod sa ating mga mag-aaral (The city government fully supports our students),” said Biazon. 

According to the IMOYA website, the onsite competition was participated in by the Philippines, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Macao, and Indonesia.  

“The Onsite Contest was a thrilling event, with participants showcasing their mathematical prowess in various categories such as Algebra, Geometry, Number Theory, and Combinatorics. The competition was intense, with each participant giving their best to secure a spot in the top ranks,” according to IMOYA.

Hong Kong-Macao emerged as the overall champion in the onsite contest while the Philippines and Indonesia won second and third places.
