Missing 10-year-old boy fished out of Pasig River
The body of a 10-year-old boy who went missing in the Pasig River in Punta, Sta. Ana, Manila was recovered on Tuesday afternoon, April 11.
According to the initial report of the Manila Police District (MPD), the boy was last seen playing with his playmates along the riverbank at about 4:30 p.m. on April 10.
Staff Sgt. Roderick Magpale, investigator on the case, said the playmates saw the victim fall down in the deep part of the river.
He said other witnesses immediately reported the incident to the family of the victim.
"Naglalaro lang 'yung mga bata sa gilid, hindi naglalangoy, kasi low-tide noon eh. During low-tide, visible ang mga rock formations sa gilid eh (The children were just playing on the side, not swimming, because it was low tide. During low-tide, the rock formations on the side are visible)," Magpale said.
The family of the victim tried to rescue the boy, but the current in the river was strong.
"Hindi kinaya kasi malakas nga raw 'yong current, inabot na doon sa medyo malalim hanggang sa lumubog na, ang nakikita na lang ay 'yung kamay hanggang sa nawala na (They were not able to save the boy because the current was strong, the boy reached the deep part of the river, all they could see was his hand until he disappeared," Magpale said.
The boy went missing for almost a day before his body was found by a resident on Tuesday afternoon.
Personnel of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) retrieved the body at around 2:10 p.m. on the same day.
Magpale said Sta. Ana Barangay Chairman Fernando Mercado told him that they had already put up a chain-link fence to block the paths to the river, but the children broke it to get in.
The body of the victim was brought to Labalan-Kiganan Funeral Homes in Mandaluyong City.
