The Philippine women’s national football team cruised past Hong Kong, 4-nil, to advance to the second round of the AFC Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament Tuesday night, April 11, at the Hisor Central Stadium in Tajikistan.
The Filipinas only needed a draw over Hong Kong to move to the next round, but managed to secure the spot in dominant fashion anew and wrapped up their Group E assignment with nine points, including a +12 goal differential (GD).
The Pinay footballers also blanked their foes and kept them empty-handed in the first round, refusing to allow even consolation goals until the end.
After a 4-0 win over Pakistan in their opening affair, the nationals sent Tajikistan reeling from an 8-0 drubbing on April 8.
It didn’t take long for the Philippines to find its scoring touch and was all over Hong Kong’s goalkeeper Ng Cheuk Wai throughout the match.
Sarina Bolden took on the scoring cudgels immediately at the fifth minute after a couple of passes from her teammates and hit it past Hong Kong’s goalie.

The Philippines remained aggressive in between the time of Bolden’s first goal until her second one, which came at the 41st minute from a Sara Eggesvik set-up she found inside the penalty arc. There was barely time for Hong Kong goalkeeper Ng to recover as the Philippines tripled its advantage three minutes later at the 44-minute mark. Meryll Serrano then converted off a set piece to join the goal column after Quinley Quezada was fouled near the box for the free kick. The second half was no different as the Filipinas barely saw signs of resistance from Hong Kong. In the 53rd minute, Quezada finally fired a goal of her own after a couple of near misses in the first half, giving the Philippines a 4-0 lead. Hong Kong tried to nail a consolation goal in added time, but nothing came out of its determined attempt. This is the first time the Philippines had a commanding win over Hong Kong, with their first meeting ending with a 1-1 draw in a friendly back in 2019, before the former one-upped the latter, 2-1, in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in 2021. The Filipinas now seek to eclipse their best overall finish in the tournament where they suffered a second-round exit at the hands of the 37th-ranked Chinese-Taipei. Additionally, in the next round, only three group winners and the best second-placed team will make their way to the playoff round for a chance to claim one of the two tickets to the Olympiad.
